The Green Building Council of Australia has unveiled an ambitious new roadmap that places manufacturers of building products at the centre of the transition to a nature-positive built environment. Moving beyond simply reducing harm, the roadmap sets clear targets from 2028 to 2050 that will shape how materials are designed, sourced and used in future developments.
For manufacturers, the message is direct: increasing circularity, reducing resource intensity and prioritising lower-impact materials will be critical to staying aligned with evolving market expectations. The roadmap highlights the need to reuse materials, cut waste and support more efficient, compact construction—areas where product innovation and design will play a decisive role.
It also translates global commitments such as the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework into practical guidance for Australia, signalling where standards and certification schemes like Green Star are heading.
Backed by industry and finance leaders, this roadmap offers manufacturers both a challenge and an opportunity to lead in shaping the next generation of sustainable building products.
